Upskilling the region’s workforce

Upskilling the region's workforce

Have your say on how we can support green jobs and skills in Yorkshire and the Humber.

Introduction

In the future, all jobs will be green jobs. There are sectors that will expand, such as retrofitting our homes or restoring peatland, and there are sectors that need to be 'greened', such as industries like steel or glass.

In addition every organisation and sector will need to play their part in the future economy, so green skills are becoming increasingly valuable.

Read our draft Regional Climate Action Report

We have prepared a report (which you can read and download below) by bringing in ideas and expertise from our commissioners, research, and experts who are tackling the problem across the country, in the region, and on the ground. You can watch the expert speaker session in the video at the foot of this page.

At this stage, the report might not give the full picture so we would really value your feedback. The ideas we are discussing affect everyone - we want to know what you think. Please give your responses in the survey below

The draft report has outlined how we can support the skills system: workers, training providers, employers, local authorities, to take the next step towards building the skills we need for the future.

This could include:

  1. Promoting awareness and understanding of the opportunity of the green economy and the skills we will need in the short and long term.
  2. Help businesses to expand by clearly communicating the opportunities for new work.
  3. Make sure all public projects have green skills training and apprenticeships.
  4. Support and inspire individuals to upskill and reskill for the green economy.
  5. Run regular green jobs and skills/careers events
  6. Develop a Yorkshire & Humber green skills mark
  7. Put focus on supporting people in high-carbon sectors to reskill into green jobs
  8. Ensure that green investment is channelled to areas that need it most.
  9. Lobby national government for increased funding in the further education sector.

Read the full report below to find out more on:

  • What the issue is and how tackling it will help the economy in Yorkshire and Humber.
  • What's happening now and what's stopping us from moving forward.
  • What could be happening and where we could be headed.

What we would like to know

We would like your input to challenge and shape the ideas set out in this first draft.

We are keen to hear from experts on different aspects of green jobs and skills to ensure rigour in our interpretation of the research and social factors underpinning this paper.

We are equally keen to hear from people who live and work in the region to ensure our final position paper and actions address the needs of our communities, workplaces, employers and workers.
