Transforming businesses for a thriving future

Transforming businesses in the region for a thriving future

Have your say on how we can help businesses in Yorkshire and the Humber become more adaptive in the face of environmental and economic change.

Introduction

Businesses across the region are up against increasing external pressures, including volatile market conditions and climate-related risk. But there is also a huge opportunity here - for businesses of all sizes to improve not only their environmental impact, but to build resilience and longevity into operations and bring security and protection to employees, to local communities and to the region.

Below you will find a draft paper, which brings together the themes, thoughts, existing research, and insights from our Delivering Impact session on this topic. We set out how we can support businesses in the region to play their part in achieving net zero, restoring nature and adapting to a changing climate, whilst ensuring that they thrive in the future economy.

Please read the paper and give us your views in the short survey below.

The draft paper brings in ideas and expertise from our Commissioners, research, and experts who are tackling the problem across the country, in the region, and on the ground. You can watch the expert speaker sessions on this topic in the videos at the foot of this page.

At this stage, the paper might not give the full picture so we would really value your feedback. The ideas we are discussing affect everyone - we want to know what you think.

Please give your responses in the survey below.

The paper outlines a number of regional actions that could support businesses to progress towards net zero and become more adaptive:

  • Integrate climate strategies with industrial and economic strategies within each locality in our region.
  • Identify green skills gaps and improve access to training.
  • Implement financial incentives to encourage carbon reduction, adaptive business models, and nature-positive initiatives.
  • Increase place-based support from local authorities that enables businesses to contribute to regional net zero and climate resilience goals.
  • Create opportunities for businesses to collaborate, share knowledge and resources, and increase the positive impact of investments.
  • Develop nature-positive business parks that enable shared provision of services and support for SMEs.
  • Prioritise low-carbon, socially-beneficial, and nature-positive decision making at the heart of the business and along the full value chain.
  • Increase financial offers such as favourable lending for green initiatives.
  • Improve access to tools and information that help businesses implement adaptive practices for climate resilience.

We would like your input to challenge and shape the ideas set out in this first draft.

We are keen to hear from experts from the business community, to ensure rigour in our interpretation of the science and social factors underpinning this paper.

We are equally keen to hear the views of people who live and work in Yorkshire and the Humber, to ensure our final position paper and actions address the needs of people and communities across the region.
